Rocks are the record keepers and storytellers of the earth. By attuning our beings to the stillness of rocks, we hear the stories they contain.

In the 18th-century slave ships were constructed along the Atlantic coast in what is now Canada. They were ballasted with rocks from the area’s shoreline. When the ships sailed to West Africa the rocks were dumped onto the shore and humans, their intended cargo, were loaded into the stifling cargo holds. The ships have dissolved into the sea and the people in their holds are no more but the rocks have not forgotten.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Camal Pirbhai & Camille Turner are two artists who work together as the collaborative art duo Camal + Camille. They are known for their work about the society we live in; about who is visible and who is not visible from a Canadian History perspective. They are known for their photo-based artworks that include, but are not limited to Lightbox images, lenticular prints and large-scale photographs. Performance, video and film all play a part in sharing this history.

Camal & Camille began creating art together after they met at the exhibition Fashionality at the McMichael Gallery, an exhibition in which they were both included. The inspiration for much of their work is exposing hidden histories. An educational component is often included with each body of work to expand on the ideas on which it is based and to bring the history to light.
