AVAILABLE WORKS ONSITE ART TORONTO 2021

Relics for the End of the World (2021) $49,000
Commercial Sign with Cree Syllabics
48″ x 118″ x 6″

Debuting at Art Toronto 2021, this new installation work by Joi T. Arcand is an extension and concrete manifestation of Arcand’s earlier 2013 work otē nīkān misiwē askīhk – Here On Future Earth (Amber Motors). In her practice Arcand is imagining what might exist if it were not for the ongoing history of settler colonialism and suppression of Indigeneity. A present and future where the Cree language is not just visible, but considered commonplace in the public sphere.

Arcand’s use of her reclaimed language can be seen as commentary on the impact of colonialism and Canada’s English speakers’ sense of entitlement over communication.
